THE SCOOTER STORE DONATES POWER WHEELCHAIR TO COLORADO IRAQ WAR VETERAN WOUNDED IN BAGHDAD

Gift of Mobility Makes Life Easier for Soldier who Lost Both Legs in Deadly Ambush

WASHINGTON, DC –Army Spc. Thomas Graham is a man with many plans, despite losing both legs in Iraq before he turned 24. Citing Spc. Graham’s sacrifices for his country, The SCOOTER Store has donated a power wheelchair to improve his quality of life and help him bring those plans to reality.

In July, life changed suddenly for Spc. Graham, a member of the 3rd Infantry Division, during his second deployment in Iraq . While patrolling Sadr City , a section of Baghdad , in a Humvee, Spc. Graham saw “a bright light” and then came the explosion. His vehicle was struck, killing two soldiers and seriously injuring him and two others. Doctors had no choice but to amputate his legs. After a brief stay in a military hospital in Germany , Spc. Graham was transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.

Spc. Graham spends his days in physical therapy, appointments and formation meetings with his unit. Because his upper body is unimpaired, Spc. Graham does not qualify for a power wheelchair from the military. He struggles to maneuver the manual chair he has been provided. He notes the difficulty in rolling up sloped streets and over the thick carpet where he is being housed.

Today, The SCOOTER Store hopes to make his life easier. The nation’s largest supplier of power wheelchairs and scooters donated a power wheelchair to Spc. Graham as part of its “Gift of Mobility” program, which donates mobility equipment to physically-challenged individuals in need. The company partnered with the ADL Foundation/Mobility Aids for the Uninsured based in Alamogordo , N.M. to make the donation to Spc. Graham.

“We appreciate the enormous sacrifice he has made and we are proud that we can help him improve his mobility and independence with this gift,” said Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store. “Everyone at The SCOOTER Store is honored to play a role in helping someone as courageous as Spc. Graham.” Jennifer Hook and George Carter, Account Managers of The SCOOTER Store’s Baltimore location delivered the power wheelchair to Spc. Graham.

Two weeks ago, Spc. Graham had called The SCOOTER Store after he saw a television advertisement about their products. He wanted to find out the cost of a power mobility device. The following week he was surprised to receive a call from The SCOOTER Store with an offer for a donated power wheelchair as part of the Gift of Mobility program. Spc. Graham says he “could not say thank you enough,” and is excited that his “life will be made a little easier,” with greater independence and mobility.

When Spc. Graham is discharged next spring or summer, he plans to move back to Arvada , Colorado , near Denver , to live in a house he is building that is specially-designed to accommodate him. He looks forward to restoring his 1996 Firebird Trans Am and will volunteer at a VA Hospital and an organization that aids needy children.

Already, he has taken a vacation in Hawaii , which was planned before his injuries. He says he was determined not let his physical condition stop him from traveling.

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Spc. Graham improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to individuals with limited mobility.

Blood drive scheduled supports troops overseas

by Airman Sondra Wieseler

49th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M.The Armed Services Blood Program is holding a blood drive March 12 at the Community Activity Center here from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The blood collected at the drive will directly benefit active duty servicemembers and their families. All donated blood will be sent overseas to units in Afghanistan and Iraq in support of the troops operating in the area of responsibility.

With all the operations in the AOR, there is an increased need for blood,” said 1st Lt. Kathryn Maitrejean, 49th Aircraft Maintence Squadron section commander, who volunteers as the installation blood drive coordinator. “So many people are unable to donate because of deployments that if you are able to give blood, it’s important.”

The ASBP collects a list from units deployed overseas of what types and how much blood is needed, said Lt. Maitrejean. Once they’ve sent the requested amount, the remaining blood goes into a pool that is then distributed as needed to different military treatment facilities throughout the Armed Forces.

The Holloman Officers’ Spouses’ Club has offered to provide free child care at the CAC for all active duty members and spouses who would like to donate but may have child care issues.

Walk-ins are welcome for the blood drive; however, appointments can be made on the Armed Services Blood Program website, www.militaryblood.dod.mil. The website also contains information on requirements to donate and a list of upcoming drives.

I’ve seen the patients who receive the units and it makes a huge difference,” said Capt. Molly Hay, 49th Medical Group, officer in charge of laboratory services, who has participated in blood drives for the past five years. “I’ve seen people’s lives saved.”

Everyone is encouraged to donate and possibly save the life of a comrade.

Congratulations Citizen of The Year--Jan Jeter of the Ink Well, Business of the Year--Boys and Girls Club, and Associate of the Year, Donna Carlson!!!

The Annual Chamber Banquet is scheduled for Friday, March 28, 2008. To honor the Chamber's Golden Anniversary, the theme will be "Celebrating 50 Great Years in Alamogordo". We plan on holding this event at the Desert Sands (Enlisted Club) at Holloman Air Force Base. It will start at 6:30. Entertainment this year will be a magic show unlike any other, performed by our own Bob Pattillo. Tickets will go on sale March 1st and can be purchased at the Chamber. Please get your tickets as soon as possible. You will need to sign up for special entrance onto the base at that time. It is sure to be a fantastic evening you won't soon forget. Please join us.

The Chamber would like to welcome Colonel Harrigian, the new Commander of Holloman Air Force Base. We wish him the best in this time of transition. We know we have a great community to share with him and are confident the Colonel and his wife, Kathy, will feel "at home" in no time at all. I urge all Chamber Members to support him as well as all base personnel during this time.

The Çhamber has started the process of revamping our website. The Board feels it's time to update what people outside of our community gather as their first impression of Alamogordo. We hope that you will like the changes.

One of the Chamber's responsibilities is to support the legislation at the state level that helps our business community in Alamogordo. We continue to do this through representatives that recently attended Legislation Day and Business Day in Santa Fe. We continually strive to pass the needs of our businessmen and women on to our representatives in Santa Fe as well as protecting against those bills that harm our welfare and interests.

This year the Chamber of Commerce will again go through the process of accreditation from the United States Chamber of Commerce. This process will be ongoing throughout the year and will be completed toward years end. This accreditation is important because it certifies that our Chamber meets or exceeds all of the National standards and requirements. We have the honor of being the only accredited Chamber in the entire state of New Mexico!

Thank you again for being Members of our Chamber.

WORLD RECORD RUN FOR HHSTTHOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M.

WORLD RECORD RUN FOR HHSTTHOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M.

— On 31 Jan. 2008, at 9:20 p.m., Mountain Standard Time, the Holloman High Speed Test Track conducted a Navy Test with a Sandia-designed payload. Initial indications are the test was successful and the payload reached a velocity of 6,589 miles per hour. This test is 136 miles per hour faster that the existing land speed record of 6,453 miles per hour – setting a new world record.“This world record is made possible by the world-class people and technology we have here at the Holloman High Speed Test Track,” said Lt. Col. Angie Suplisson, commander 846th Test Squadron. “We do everything in-house here at the track, from design, drafting and fabrication of the sleds to rocket loading, target building and preparation, high-speed photography and data analysis. My team is the best in the world.”Official Mach speeds will be calculated by HHSTT engineers in the coming days. The payload traveled a distance of 3.61 miles in about 6 seconds. The sled consisted of three pusher sleds and a forebody sled. A helium tent enclosed 2.77 miles of the track in order to reduce the aerodynamic heating and drag on the payload. The detonation of the payload at the north end of the track and speed of the sled created multiple sonic booms felt throughout the Tularosa Basin.Congressional staffers from the offices of Rep. Jeff Bingaman and Rep. Steve Pearce were on-hand for the test as were officials from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; Sandia Laboratories; and White Sands Missile Range, N.M.Col. Suplisson was not only pleased by the results, but the outstanding support the track received from the community and the members of TEAM Holloman.    “I would like to thank all of our distinguished guests and especially the men and women of the 846th Test Squadron, 46th Test Group and TEAM Holloman for all the work that goes into a test of this magnitude,” she said. For more information on the Holloman High Speed Test Track, visit the Holloman web site at www.holloman.af.mil.                                                             -30-

HHSTT ATTEMPTS WORLD RECORD RUN – Update
01/30/2008

HHSTT ATTEMPTS WORLD RECORD RUN – Update

Please note the date change to 31 January.

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — Officials at the Holloman High Speed Test Track have announced they will attempt a world record test run on Jan. 31.
The test is part of a project for the Navy, which will blast the rail-mounted rocket sled to a speed of Mach 8.9. The sled will carry a Sandia National Laboratories-designed payload and will reach a predicted velocity of 6,494 miles per hour and detonate at the north end of the track. The current record is 9,456 feet per second (6,453 miles per hour) or Mach 8.6.
The sled train will consist of three pusher sleds and forebody sled. The motors will deliver a total thrust of 814,000 pounds. The payload will travel a distance of 3.61 miles in about 6 seconds. A helium tent will enclose 2.77 miles of the track in order to reduce the aerodynamic heating and drag on the payload.
The HHSTT occupies 11 square miles in the northwest area of Holloman and is adjacent to the White Sands Missile Range. The facility is seen as a bridge between laboratory experiments and full-scale flight testing for advanced weapons systems. Past tests on the 10-mile track have consisted of egress systems, aerothermal, dispense and infrared countermeasures. The HHSTT supports testing for Air Force, Navy, Army, Missile Defense Agency, international and commercial customers.
First constructed in 1949 for $451,000, the original 3,550 feet has since been extended to 50,788 feet in length.
The test is scheduled for 7 p.m., however, delays can be expected. For those wanting to catch a glimpse of the world record event, the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo will be an excellent location for viewing. For more information and photos of the HHSTT, visit the Holloman AFB website at www.holloman.af.mil.

“Dinos Alive”, the new special exhibit sponsored by the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, met with roaring success when it opened at the White Sands Mall in Alamogordo on January 19. “From the moment the doors opened, there was a constant line of kids, parents and grandparents,” said Museum Director Randall Hayes. “We are very pleased with the community’s response to the exhibit and can’t say enough about the support of the business community who helped us bring this to Alamogordo,” he added. Over the first three days of the exhibit, more than 2300 people attended. Several area schools have booked tour groups through the exhibit and more are expected. “To date,” Hayes said, “we have well over 3,000 students coming to visit the exhibit and we get more calls every day.”

“Local businesses, especially the media, have been very supportive of “Dinos Alive”,” said Museum Marketing Director Cathy Harper. According to Harper, the White Sands Mall donated use of the space inside of the mall for the exhibit, Comfort Inn & Suites provided a week of lodging for the dino tech who came to assist in the installation and Pueblo Homes pitched in to assist with construction inside the mall. “We would also like to thank the City of Alamogordo and the City Promotion Board for helping us,” added Harper. All local media sponsored the event, including: Alamogordo Daily News, Burt Broadcasting (94Key, KZZX 105.3 FM, COOL FM 107.9, KINN 1270 AM News/Talk), WP Broadcasting (Coyote Country 92.7 FM, STEALTH 103.7 FM, KRSY 1230 AM News/Talk), KUPR FM 91.7 FM, KH11 88.9 FM, and www.everythingalamogordo.com.

“Dinos Alive!” is a major fund raising event for the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation’s education programs. “All the profit from this event will go back into the Foundation’s education programs,” said Hayes, “allowing us to expand and enhance already successful programs such as Shuttle Camp and other outreach activities.”

The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, Sundays noon to five. It will be on display through April 27, 2008. Special arrangements for tour groups and after hours activities can be made through the Museum’s Education Department.

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is a division of the NM Department of Cultural Affairs. Admission to the museum is $3.00 for adults, $2.75 for seniors and military personnel, $2.50 for children four to twelve years old, and under four free.
